The cost effective nature and ease of use for simulation technologies have enabled armed forces in Asia to better train their service members. According to Amo Mostofi, General Manager, Asia at Clarion Events “With the increasing cultural acceptance of using digital technologies like simulation to train their personnel, Asian military forces are recognising it as an important tool to keep their warfighters prepared and proficient in carrying out operations.”

A case in point is the Thai military. The Thai defence budget has been set at $5.4 billion USD. The Royal Thai Army spends 28% of its budget on seminars, education abroad and training and exercises. The Royal Thai Navy spends 22% for the same and the Air Force has theirs at 6%. There is also a significant requirement in Thailand for providing realistic training in different operational environments. The Thai military is looking at wargaming to simulate large scale manuevers and they are looking at cost effective COTS simulation solutions.

The Royal Thai Armed Forces have a large number of officers and experts driving their plans and policies forward for their simulation capabilities. Three such experts are Captain Nanata Tantadsakul, Group Captain Thanapant Raicharoen and Wing Commander Surongkan Thaosan.

Captain Nanata Tantadsakul, from the Royal Thai Navy and Defence Technology Institute, has a remit that focuses on MS&T research and development for the Thai Defence Technology Institute and specifically their live systems trainers, virtual systems simulators and joint constructive simulators. Group Captain Thanapant Raicharoen who is the Director of Information Technology Division in the Defence Information and Space Technology Department, is involved with Thailand's air wargame simulation system for the Royal Thai Air Force Air Command and Staff College. Wing Commander Surongkan Thaosan, who is the Chief of Combat Data, Command and Control Division from the Royal Thai Air Force manages the concept of operations (CONOPS) for the Royal Thai Air Force’s wargaming capabilities and demonstrate integrated technologies like Software Developer Tools, DBA ,XML ,XNA, GIS Tools, MIL-STD 2525B and HLA.

All three of these experts will be at Clarion Events’ Military Training & Simulation Asia conference on 28-29 September 2011 in Singapore. They will be joined by speakers from around the region, including Singapore, Australia, the Philippines and Korea.

These featured nations and more will be briefing on the challenges and procurement initiatives for simulation equipment and technologies as Asian armed forces begin to weigh the options for buying new equipment to overcome issues such as best fit COTs software, integrating digital equipment to live training and identifying the right C2 simulation systems for their specific requirements.
